Five Participants represent one nation and are requested to pursue their interests. One such team consists of four delegates and one head delegate.
The head delegates will receive secret negotiation goals which they have to achieve together with their delegates. These negotiation goals should clarify negotiation positions. For example, one such goal could be the introduction of tariffs on environmental harmful goods of a specific percentage.
The model WTO has three arenas with can be used to achieve these goals:
Like the head delegates, each delegate sits also in the committees, where she tries to achieve the requested goals. On every day, each nation meets in order to discuss the achieved results in the negotiation committees.
At the end of every day head delegates meet to discuss possible alliances. For example the head delegates of China agrees to accept tariffs environmental harmful goods if the US accepts compulsory licensing on environmentally important technologies.
These three levels of negotiations –committee, head delegate and delegate meeting - allow a wide space of tactics and strategies. To use these opportunities is up to you.
