Before negotiations start, all country representatives meet in their respective country group. The head delegate of each country will guide the discussion.

 

In your country meetings you exchange your bargaining positions and look for trade off possibilities. You define the strategy for your countries negotiations and come to a common understanding of the most urgent topics to be dealt with. All country representatives leave the country meeting knowing the negotiation targets they have to bargain for.

 
After each round of negotiations in the committees the country members meet for additional country meetings to fine-tune the bargaining process.

Within your committee you will negotiate a detailed agenda of subtopics to your committees’ topic. The agenda will be prepared by the committee chairs.

 

Having agreed on the agenda the negotiations start. Since each committee member represents a country the positions on each topic of the agenda will be shared between the committee members. Negotiation starts on the basis of these positions. In the bargaining process the participants will seek compromises and decisions on their issues.  

 

All discussions in the committee will lead to the committee’s final declaration. This final declaration will reflect the compromises which the country representatives in the committee agreed on according to the subtopics. Click here for an example of last year's Model WTO.

The final declaration serves as a resume of the committee’s results. The committee members vote on their final declaration by unanimity.

 

On the last day of the oikos Model WTO all committee declarations will be presented at the WTO headquarters in Geneva. 

 

First the students will meet with WTO experts who in their professional life deal with the committee topic. They will give feedback on the final declaration, giving the students an insight into the state of affairs in real WTO negotiations.
